what was the purpose of the 3 round wooden pegs in the first tree?

@@nyhage1 starting @ 42 seconds, when you start cutting the notch oin your first tree, theres 3 round wood pegs driven flush into the tree (one on the left, one in the centre, one on the right) When you remove the notch @ 1:44 you can see the middle peg must have been driven quite deep into the tree. I was just curious as to why they were there?

Getting firewood can be a great adventure. I use a four wheeler and trailer. No boat ride though. That is quite unique.
I think I would opt for a couple more barrels for floats
